1. How does Laser Egg work?

The Laser Egg has a small fan that pulls ambient air in through the back of the unit and pushes it out the front. In the middle, a laser beam cuts across this air current. As particles pass through the laser beam, the beam’s light is refracted. A sensor picks up the subtle changes, and information about the size and number of particles passing through is determined through a series of algorithms.

2. What does Laser Egg measure and what functions does it have?

Laser Egg measures:

  • PM2.5
  • AQI
  • Particle Counts
  • Humidity
  • Temperature
  • The Laser Egg can also display your local weather forecast. (coming soon)

3. Where can you use Laser Egg?

Laser Egg can be used indoors or outdoors to measure air quality.

Use the Laser Egg indoors to understand whether your air purifier is working and if the air quality standard that you want is being achieved. Figure out when you need to change the filters on your air purifier and learn how to improve your air quality by using the Laser Egg to find leaks.

Laser Egg is particularly suited for indoor use because it can be used to monitor how effective your efforts are at keeping your environment clean with an air purifier. Then you can know where you need to make adjustments.

Do not use the Laser Egg outdoors for extended periods of time (e.g. multiple days/weeks) and do not use in an industrial setting.

4. How do I know how good/bad the air quality is?

If you are using the AQI mode of Laser Egg then you can see the quality level of the air as Good, Moderate, Unhealthy, Very Unhealthy or Hazardous.

We also provide an air quality chart with each Laser Egg so you can compare the readings to the chart and know what to do to protect yourself and your family. You can see a copy of the chart below.

5. The Laser Egg has AQI US (USA standard) and AQI CN (China Standard). The numbers are different. What is the difference and which one should I follow?

For Taiwan, you should follow the readings for AQI US. This is the international standard which is recognized in Taiwan and around the world. The Laser Egg is of course, very popular in China so the product includes the Chinese AQI standard. China uses a different way to calculate air pollution and the number is always lower than the international AQI US standard.

We provide an AQI US chart with every product on our website along with recommendations on what you can do at certain pollution levels. You can see the chart below:

6. If the air quality is poor, what can I do?

We provide an air quality chart with each Laser Egg so that you can better understand the numbers and what they mean for your health. Generally speaking, if the air quality is poor, you should take appropriate precautions like wearing a quality mask that can filter air pollution effectively when you are outdoors. You can also purchase an air purifier for your home or office to filter out harmful pollutants in the air.

This FAQ section details many of the frequently asked questions we are asked concerning everything from air pollution, air purifiers, anti-pollution face masks and the Laser Egg air quality monitor. After browsing through this section, if you still have any unanswered questions, please contact us.

7. Can Laser Egg clean the air?

Laser Egg is designed to measure air quality. It is not able to clean the air. We offer a number of air purifiers for your home which can effectively clean the air. Laser Egg can be used alongside an air purifier so that you know whether or not your efforts to keep your environment clean and healthy are working.

8. How accurate is Laser Egg?

Laser Egg has been extensively tested for accuracy against machines costing upwards of $10,000 to $20,000 US Dollars.

The US Embassy in Beijing uses a machine called a BAM 1020 Air Pollution Monitor. This machine costs $20,000+ US Dollars. The readings from the Laser Egg closely follow the BAM 1020, with a correlation coefficient of 0.92 (1/00 being a perfect match)

Laser Egg has also been tested against the TSI DustTrak II air pollution monitor, an industry standard machine for measuring pollutants in the air (around $8,000 US Dollars). We measured the Laser Egg alongside this machine and the readings were identical every time.

9. My air purifier already has a sensor in it? How is Laser Egg different?

The simple answer is…. Getting your air quality data from the same unit that cleans your air does not give you a clear picture of what’s going on across the room.

We have written a more in depth article about why Laser Egg is more accurate and useful than relying just on your air purifier to tell you how good the air quality is. You can check the article here

10. What kind of warranty does Laser Egg come with?

Laser Egg comes with a 1 year warranty. If you experience any issues while using Laser Egg, you may contact us directly and we will help to fix the problem or offer you a replacement.

11. Does Laser Egg need to be cleaned, serviced or re-calibrated?

No, your Laser Egg does not require any cleaning, servicing, or re-calibration as long as it is used in standard indoor environments.

Do not use the Laser Egg outdoors for extended periods of time (e.g. multiple days/weeks) and do not use in an industrial setting.

12. Does Laser Egg make any noise?

No, Laser Egg does not produce ambient noise . There is a small fan inside the rear of the unit which you can only hear if you place it right next to your ear.

13. How long does the battery last?

14. Do you need to change the battery?

No, the battery inside is a Lithium ion battery, like the kind found in your cell phone. The battery lasts for approximately 8 hours on a full charge.
