WHAT DOES LASER EGG 2 MEASURE?

Maybe you’re the kind of person who doesn’t care whether it’s 5ºC or 15ºC outside, you just want someone to tell you that you need a sweater. That’s fine.

But if you want to take control of your environment, then you need to be able to make accurate assessments. Part of that is having a highly calibrated tool that can make precise measurements, certainly. The Laser Egg lets you see in extreme detail how little changes—from resealing your windows to burning higher-quality candles—can truly have an impact on your indoor air quality.

ON-SITE CHECKS FOR OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Parents and schools are particularly concerned about the air that their children are breathing. Their phone app may say that the air is really bad in their area, but out in the mountains, where the activity is taking place, the situation may be completely different.

The Laser Egg gives them the confidence to decide whether or not activities need to be moved indoors, based on what the air in their immediate surroundings is like.

Smog is bad. We know that. It’s not great to breathe in high levels of polluted air every day. But cigarette smoke is just so much worse. If you’ve ever had someone justify contaminating a space with second hand smoke with a line like “Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung are highly polluted, and you’re worried about this one cigarette?” then they need to see a Laser Egg.

Seriously. Just turn on a Laser Egg, then light a cigarette and watch what happens. You don’t even need to hold the cigarette near the egg — The AQI reading will still spike to the 350-500 range.

Most people know that smog is bad and cigarettes are also bad, but nobody really knows how to quantify and compare those things. But there are tools to help you see the invisible things that can hurt you, which lets you act, and we finally have one that’s both powerful and affordable.

1. Check the air quality in and around your home, office, school etc. Taiwan’s EPA publishes data on PM2.5 levels based on a 12 hour rolling average. It doesn’t reflect what the real-time pollution level is outside right now. Often the Laser Egg will show levels much higher, and sometimes lower, than what you are seeing in various pollution apps and websites. Laser Egg will give you that up to the minute information to better plan outdoor activities. 
    
2. Know when it is safe to open windows even if it looks like a nice day outside.
    
3. Know when to turn on your air purifier and also whether you need to increase the fan speed and keep indoor pollution levels within safe limits.
    
4. Save money on purchasing a new filter for your purifier. A filter can still be used long after the machine’s red warning light has turned on despite whatever the manufacturer recommends. By monitoring pollution levels you can see when the best time to change the filter is and extend the period in between replacements.

WHAT FUNCTIONS DOES LASER EGG 2 HAVE?

For Taiwan, you should follow the readings for AQI US. This is the international standard which is recognized in Taiwan and around the world.

If you are using the AQI US mode of Laser Egg then you can see the quality level of the air as Good, Moderate, Unhealthy, Very Unhealthy or Hazardous. 

We also provide an air quality chart with each Laser Egg so you can compare the readings to the chart and know what to do to protect yourself and your family. You can see a copy of the chart below.

The Laser Egg 2 uses laser-based light scattering to individually count particles as they enter the device, and calculate PM2.5 concentrations based upon these measurements. This allows for extremely fast measurements, with high accuracy readings calculated every 0.1 seconds.

Laser Egg has been extensively tested for accuracy against machines costing upwards of $10,000 to $20,000 US Dollars.

Laser Egg has been tested by Taiwan's National Laboratory, ITRI. The readings from the Laser Egg closely follow their professional testing machines, with a correlation coefficient of 0.98 (1.00 being a perfect match). Data is shown in the diagram below of R2.

Laser Egg has also been tested against the TSI DustTrak II air pollution monitor, an industry standard machine for measuring pollutants in the air (around $8,000 US Dollars). We measured the Laser Egg alongside this machine and the readings were identical every time.

Using HomeKit, the Laser Egg 2 can turn on your air purifier via a smart plug when the PM2.5 levels rise, or change the color of your HomeKit enabled lights as the air quality changes. HomeKit devices can be connected and automated in just a few simple steps.
